Neil, a five-and-a-half-year-old southern elephant seal weighing 1,000 kg, returns every year to the beaches of Hobart, Australia, to moult. Elephant seals shed not just fur but the entire top layer of skin — a process called catastrophic moulting — causing intense itching that drives them to rub against hard objects, including traffic cones. Neil has become a beloved local mascot, but his urban wanderings pose a growing challenge for wildlife managers.
