BitTorrent turns 25: the story of a legendary and controversial protocol
Twenty-five years ago, programmer Bram Cohen announced BitTorrent to a peer-to-peer mailing list, describing it simply as a new app "in working order." The protocol transformed internet file sharing by enabling fast, decentralised distribution of large files without a central server. Over the following decades BitTorrent became both a technological legend and a flashpoint for copyright disputes and digital piracy debates.
