New study suggests Earth could survive the Sun's red giant expansion

Astrophysicists Mats Esseldeurs and Leon Decin from KU Leuven and Stéphane Mathis from Université Paris-Saclay published findings in "Astronomy & Astrophysics" suggesting Earth may survive the Sun's red giant phase rather than being engulfed. The commonly held view had Earth being consumed as the Sun expands. Their new calculations favour a survival scenario in which Earth drifts to a safer orbit.
