Sun fires 10 solar flares in 24 hours — northern lights possible over July 4 weekend

Following an X1.1 solar flare on June 30, the sun fired off 10 M-class flares within 24 hours, with several accompanied by coronal mass ejections (CMEs) aimed at least partially at Earth. Solar physicist Tamitha Skov dubbed the activity a "machine-gun sun" and said more than five solar storms are heading our way. At least three offer good chances of aurora displays, raising hopes for northern lights sightings over the July 4 weekend.
