Vatican excommunicates Lefebvrists over unauthorised bishop ordinations under Pope Leo XIV

The Vatican has imposed excommunication — the most severe penalty in canon law — after the Society of Saint Pius X carried out episcopal ordinations without the approval of Pope Leo XIV. The Pope had previously urged the Lefebvrists to abandon the move, but his appeal went unheeded. It is the gravest crisis between the Vatican and the Lefebvrist movement in nearly 40 years.
