Society of St. Pius X ordains four bishops without papal approval

The Society of St. Pius X has announced the ordination of four new bishops without the approval of Pope Francis or the Holy See. The Vatican had previously warned that such an act risked excommunication, as occurred in 1988 when founder Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre conducted unauthorised ordinations and was excommunicated. No formal Vatican response to the current ordinations has yet been announced.
