EPA changed test fuel in 2020 — older and newer MPG figures are no longer comparable

Since 2020, the EPA has used lower-sulphur gasoline with a 10% ethanol blend for its emissions and fuel economy testing, altering the resulting MPG figures. The switch means that fuel economy ratings published before and after 2020 are not directly comparable. The change has gone largely unnoticed despite its significant effect on how official consumption figures should be interpreted.
