NHTSA proposes removing brake pedal requirement for driverless vehicles

The US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has proposed a rule eliminating the requirement for manual brake controls in vehicles designed to operate exclusively with automated driving systems. Tesla and Zoox are among the companies that stand to benefit from the proposed change. Vehicles intended for human drivers would still be required to retain existing braking controls.
