Chandra X-ray Observatory finds Milky Way spiral arms extend farther than thought

New data from NASA's Chandra X-ray Observatory and ESA's XMM-Newton suggest that the two outermost spiral arms of the Milky Way may reach farther from the galaxy's centre than previously believed. The finding is based on newly reprocessed X-ray observations and could prompt astronomers to revise their understanding of our galaxy's structure. The results were accompanied by an updated artist's concept showing the adjusted arm positions.
