Supermassive black holes suppress star formation in massive galaxies

Researcher Xin "Cindy" Xiang of the University of Michigan has identified a mystery: the most massive galaxies in the Universe appear to be missing large numbers of stars. She believes supermassive black holes at their centres are responsible for suppressing, or "quenching", new star formation. The finding sheds new light on how galaxies evolve and grow.
