Mel Gibson's "The Passion of the Christ" returns to cinemas in September 2026

The last few years have been relatively quiet for Oscar-winning actor/director Mel Gibson , who most recently starred in the 2025 crime thriller, Hunting Season , which is available to rent or purchase on Prime Video . Before Hunting Season , Gibson was starring in at least two action movies a year, but things have slowed down for the star now that he’s working on not one, but two of the most ambitious projects of his career at the same time. Gibson is returning to direct a pair of follow-ups to his 2004 film, The Passion of the Christ , which are coming to theaters in 2027 and 2028. First up is The Resurrection of the Christ: Part One , which will be released on May 5, 2027, and following it is The Resurrection of the Christ: Part Two , which will be released on May 25, 2028.
