Competing genetic programs drive brain cortex development, study finds

A multispecies study published on 1 July 2026 in Nature supports the multinodal induction–exclusion model of brain network development. The patterning of the cortex from sensorimotor to association areas is governed by two opposing transcriptomically defined programmes: induction and exclusion. The findings advance understanding of how distinct cortical regions acquire their specialised functions.
