Webb telescope detects hydrocarbons in white dwarf planet's atmosphere

The James Webb Space Telescope has detected hydrocarbons and aerosols in the atmosphere of planet WD 1856 b, which orbits a white dwarf star, using transmission spectroscopy. The discovery provides insight into the planet's mass and heating history. The findings were published on 1 July 2026 in Nature.
