Thousands of Fish Die in Ecological Disaster at Lake Pilchowickie During Dam Repairs
A major ecological disaster unfolded at Lake Pilchowickie in Lower Silesia during repairs to the Pilchowice Dam, as thousands of fish perished in oxygen-depleted, overheated water in the nearly drained reservoir. Toxic water contaminated with decomposition byproducts and bottom sediments then flowed into the Bóbr river, causing environmental damage over potentially many kilometres. Dam repair contractor Tauron insists all precautions were taken and ichthyologists were consulted, but the outcome proved catastrophic.
