Sweden Mandates Cash Acceptance in Shops and Pharmacies from 1 July 2026
From 1 July 2026, grocery stores and pharmacies in Sweden are legally required to accept cash payments, reversing the country's trend towards a cashless society. The law is designed to bolster national resilience in case of crisis or war, when electronic payment systems could fail. Sweden's central bank is also advising residents to keep a cash reserve for emergencies.
