Over 1,000 heat wave deaths recorded in Spain in June

June 2026 proved devastating for Europe, with Spain alone recording over 1,000 deaths linked to a heat wave. It was the hottest first half of a year ever measured in the country, with temperatures more than 1.5°C above average. Other European nations also suffered casualties from the extreme heat, which was felt even in alpine regions.
