Dying stars drift through space due to thousands of asymmetric mass ejections
A new scientific model proposes that Sun-like stars do not die peacefully: over hundreds of thousands of years, they undergo roughly 10,000 asymmetric mass ejections, each delivering a small recoil. The cumulative effect of these "kicks" sends the resulting white dwarf drifting through space at a measurable speed. The model neatly explains why wide binary star systems tend to break apart once one star becomes a white dwarf.
