Ocean temperatures break records – scientists warn of uncharted territory

The first half of 2026 saw record-breaking ocean temperatures, with an average of 20.04°C — slightly below the record set in the same period in 2024, but June 2026 set an all-time monthly record. Scientists point to the El Niño phenomenon as a key driver of the extreme anomalies. They warn that oceans have entered "uncharted territory" and that what we are seeing is only the beginning.
