LHC shut down until 2030 as CERN begins major High-Luminosity upgrade

CERN shut down the Large Hadron Collider on 29 June 2026 for its most ambitious overhaul to date. The accelerator is being upgraded to the High-Luminosity LHC (HiLumi LHC) configuration, which will dramatically increase the rate of particle collisions recorded by detectors. The machine is expected to resume operations after 2030.
