Japanese submarine sinks USS Juneau during Valiant Shield exercise in the Pacific

During the Valiant Shield exercise (June 22 – July 1), the decommissioned USS Juneau (LPD-10) was sunk by a Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force submarine more than 200 nautical miles off the Mariana Islands. The biennial exercise involves the US, Japan, Australia, Canada and New Zealand and focuses on joint maritime combat proficiency. Rear Admiral Eric Anduze called the sinking an outstanding opportunity to integrate allied capabilities for high-end Pacific operations.
