Bible becomes mandatory reading in Texas public schools from grade 1

Texas's Republican-led State Board of Education approved a new mandatory reading list requiring at least one Bible passage per year starting in first grade. Approved excerpts include Adam and Eve, David and Goliath, Job, the eight Beatitudes, and the parables of the Prodigal Son and the Good Samaritan. Certain Gospels will be used as companion reads to other texts. The decision also opens the door to rewriting middle-grade social studies lessons.
