EU cuts tariff-free UK steel import quotas by nearly a quarter

The EU announced Tuesday it is cutting tariff-free import quotas for UK steel by nearly a quarter of last year's volumes, with 50 percent tariffs applying above the new thresholds. The UK exports around 1.7 million tonnes of finished steel to the EU annually, and roughly 70 percent of British steelmakers' exports go to the EU market. Business and Trade Secretary Peter Kyle said the UK will continue negotiating with Brussels for more generous country-specific quotas.
