South Africa's anti-immigrant violence: migrants scapegoated for structural failures
Researcher Aimée-Noel Mbiyozo of the Institute for Security Studies argues that South Africa's recurring waves of anti-migrant violence stem from migrants being used as convenient political scapegoats. Public frustration over unemployment, inequality and corruption is genuine, but migration data and labour market realities do not support the claim that immigrants cause these structural problems. Anti-migrant narratives persist because they offer politically expedient explanations, not because they are evidence-based.
