Over one million migrants apply to regularise status in Spain – double the expected number
More than one million undocumented migrants and asylum seekers have applied to regularise their status in Spain under a government scheme announced in January, double the roughly 500,000 people it was originally designed to help. The registration period closed on Tuesday. The socialist-led government launched the initiative to harness the benefits of immigration at a time when most European nations are tightening their borders.
