HS2 drops autonomous train tech and cuts top speed to 320 km/h in latest reset

The UK's troubled HS2 high-speed rail project is scrapping autonomous train operation (ATO) technology and reducing its maximum operating speed from 360 km/h to 320 km/h. The changes, revealed in a National Audit Office (NAO) report, are part of a project reset that began in January 2025 aimed at cutting costs and schedule risk. The Department for Transport agreed to simplify the railway's technical specification to make the project more deliverable.
