Supergirl opens to disappointing $38M — DC Studios defends the film

After Superman took flight with a relatively smooth launch back in 2025 , kicking off the newest iteration of a DC universe on the big screen, DC Studios probably didn't expect their next big screen adventure to receive such a kicking, or to be met with such little interest. Supergirl might well have put Kara Zor-El at the center of the new DCU, but its opening weekend has landed well below expectations , prompting a rare public response from DC Studios co-CEO Peter Safran . In its opening weekend, Supergirl earned a highly disappointing $38 million domestically and $68 million worldwide, a crushing start for a reported $170 million blockbuster . The film will struggle to wash its face financially at those levels.
