Abdul Ahad Momand, only Afghan to fly in space, has died

Abdul Ahad Momand, a pilot in the Afghan Air Force and the only Afghan citizen ever to fly in space, has died. In 1988, he was recruited for the Soviet space programme and flew to an orbital station while the USSR was waging war in his homeland. He was part of the Soviet Intercosmos programme, which sent cosmonauts from allied nations into orbit.
