Thousands flee South Africa ahead of anti-immigration groups' June 30 'deadline'

Anti-immigration groups in South Africa set a June 30 deadline demanding all undocumented immigrants leave the country or they would "shut the country down." In the weeks before the deadline, xenophobic violence surged, including attacks on foreign-owned businesses and immigrants killed during protests. Demonstrators accused immigrants — who make up roughly 4% of the population — of stealing jobs, collapsing public services and fuelling crime, despite no evidence supporting those claims.
