How chromosomes survive the forces of cell division
When an animal, plant or fungal cell divides, it doubles its DNA and condenses it into X-shaped chromosomes before the nucleus disassembles. The chromosomes are then subjected to extreme mechanical stress as they are pulled apart. New research suggests this process may actually strengthen the chromosomes rather than damage them.
