Guineafowl puffer: the fish that is fatally toxic yet used as a toy by sea lions
The guineafowl puffer (Arothron meleagris) has two defence mechanisms: the ability to inflate its body into a ball shape, and a powerful toxin — tetrodotoxin — that is lethal to predators. Despite this, young sea lions off the coast of Mexico playfully nudge the fish like a ball, an experience that is highly stressful for the puffer.
