NASA's X-59 Achieves Supersonic Flight With Near-Silent "Thump" Instead of Sonic Boom
NASA is testing the Lockheed Martin X-59 Quesst supersonic aircraft, which replaces the thunderous sonic boom with a quiet thump equivalent to a car door slamming shut 20 feet away. The X-59 first flew late last year and recently began supersonic test flights. NASA plans to tour American cities to gather public feedback on the quieter sound. A successful programme could pave the way for commercial supersonic airliners on overland routes, more than two decades after Concorde retired.
