Spat-on Vietnam vets myth was right-wing invention, not history
The 1982 film "First Blood" cemented the myth of Vietnam veterans being spat on and shunned by their fellow Americans. Historians argue this is a fabrication: both the political right and left courted veterans, and military service actually helped careers. There is no credible historical evidence for the scenes of public contempt portrayed in Hollywood films.
