Rip currents at the beach: how to spot them and survive
A rip current is a strong, narrow flow of water pulling swimmers away from shore towards open sea — invisible to the eye and dangerous even for experienced swimmers. It occurs not only on rough beaches and is one of the leading causes of drowning worldwide. The key survival rule is not to fight the current head-on, but to swim parallel to the shore until you escape its pull.
