A star passed near the Sun 2.5 million years ago, sending more comets our way
Scientists from the Planetary Science Institute in the US and the University of Bordeaux have determined that a star passed close to the Sun roughly 2.5 million years ago. The encounter's effects are still visible today in the form of an elevated number of comets entering the inner Solar System. The stellar flyby is believed to have gravitationally disturbed the Oort Cloud, deflecting many comets toward the Sun.
