Moderna co-founder: AstraZeneca deal boosted the company but mRNA drugs never materialised
Moderna co-founder Kenneth Chien recalls the 2013 partnership deal with AstraZeneca, which he helped secure and for which CEO Stéphane Bancel gifted him a Hermès belt. The collaboration brought Moderna billions in funding and indirectly paved the way for the life-saving COVID-19 mRNA vaccine. However, the up-to-40 mRNA-based drugs for cancer and cardiovascular disease planned under the deal never materialised.
