"Fragments of Ice" documents Soviet collapse through a Ukrainian ice skater's home videos
Ukrainian film-maker Maria Stoianova has created a documentary built entirely from home-video footage shot by her father Mykhailo Stoianov, an ice skater and dancer with the Ukrainian national ice ballet who toured the US, Canada and the Middle East during the 1980s and 90s. The film traces the decline of communism and the Soviet collapse through one family's personal memories. Critics have compared its style to the work of documentary film-maker Adam Curtis.
