Clay figurine from La Blanca may be Mesoamerica's oldest dated numerical record
Among more than 5,000 clay figurines excavated at La Blanca, one stands out: a ceramic fragment dating to 750–650 BC bearing eleven carefully impressed dots arranged in three columns of 3, 4 and 4. Researchers Julia Guernsey and Stephanie M. Strauss of the University of Texas and Michael Love of California State University argue it may be the oldest dated numerical record in all of Mesoamerica.
