California law banning loud streaming ads takes effect July 1, 2025

A California law taking effect on July 1 bans streaming platforms from airing advertisements louder than the content being watched. Services such as Netflix, Hulu and Disney+ must equalise ad volume to match that of their programmes. A similar rule for broadcast and cable TV has been in place in the US nationwide since 2012 under the federal CALM Act.
