Serious birth injuries in England at highest rate since records began in 2020
NHS figures show that 31.1 in every 1,000 women giving birth in England suffered the most serious type of perineal tear in the first quarter of 2025 — the highest rate since monitoring began in 2020. The data also points to rising rates of haemorrhage and other severe injuries, a trend experts have described as a "national crisis" in maternity care.
