Museum Drawer Fossils Reveal Unknown Saber-Toothed Cat Species From 5 Million Years Ago

Fossils stored in a museum drawer and labelled simply as "feline" have been identified by a UC Berkeley paleontologist as remains of a very ancient and previously unknown saber-toothed cat that lived in North America more than 5 million years ago. The nearly complete skull helps clarify the evolutionary history of large-fanged felines before they went extinct around 10,000 years ago. The discovery sheds new light on how saber-toothed cats diversified over millennia.
