15-million-year-old giant eggshells reveal how plants coped with a warmer Earth
Scientists analysed oxygen atoms preserved in 15-million-year-old fossilised giant bird eggshells to determine how plants responded to higher temperatures during the Miocene epoch. The Miocene — a geological "in-between" period, more recent than the age of dinosaurs but older than the Ice Ages — was significantly warmer than today. The findings could shed light on how modern ecosystems may respond to contemporary climate change.
