How to reject an indebted parent's inheritance and avoid their debts

When a parent dies in debt, their liabilities do not disappear automatically and can pass to heirs. To avoid inheriting debts, a beneficiary must formally renounce the inheritance before a court or notary within six months of learning of the death. An alternative is to accept the inheritance with the benefit of inventory, which caps liability at the value of the inherited estate.
