AI deciphers Herculaneum scrolls charred by Mount Vesuvius 2,000 years ago

The eruption of Vesuvius in 79 AD buried Herculaneum's famous Villa of the Papyri under 18 metres of ash and rock, preserving hundreds of scrolls that were too fragile to unroll physically. Scientists have now used particle accelerators and artificial intelligence to virtually unroll and read the Herculaneum scrolls, nearly 2,000 years after the disaster. The collection is the only known surviving library from Greco-Roman antiquity.
