Somalia Jails 27-Year-Old Woman 3 Years for Online Government Criticism
Sadia Moalim Ali, a 27-year-old nursing graduate and rickshaw driver, was sentenced on 25 June to three years in prison in Somalia for insulting government institutions on social media. The verdict was immediately condemned as "fundamentally unjust" by former presidents, prime ministers and human rights groups. She had also been charged with incitement to commit a crime but was acquitted of that charge.
