Three-quarters of mainland France is under a red heat alert during an intense heatwave. The Côte d'Azur is notably spared from the most extreme temperatures because the Mediterranean Sea cools the hot air flowing in from the northwest, keeping the southeastern coast significantly cooler than the rest of the country.
