Polish audit: 136 counties lack maternity wards, illegal fees and no pain relief
Poland's Supreme Audit Office (NIK) warns in a new report that from 2026, maternity wards will be absent in 136 counties across the country. In hospitals that still operate delivery units, many women cannot access pain relief during labour. NIK also found that hospitals charge illegal fees for services covered by the national health fund (NFZ), and doctors work shifts as long as 96 hours without a break.
