Star HD 7977 passed near the Sun 2.5 million years ago, disrupting comet orbits
About 2.5 million years ago, the star HD 7977 passed unusually close to the Sun — a short distance on a cosmic scale. Scientists link this event to today's anomalies in the behaviour of certain comets in the Solar System, particularly those appearing for the first time in its inner regions. The trace of that close flyby is still visible in the trajectories of these celestial bodies today.
