Highlife Music Gets UNESCO Recognition as New Generation Revives the Genre
Highlife, a music genre born around 100 years ago in the port cities of Ghana by blending colonial brass with traditional African rhythms, has been officially recognised by UNESCO as part of the world's intangible cultural heritage. Once the soundtrack of West African independence movements, the genre is now being revived and reinvented by a new generation of musicians. Its global popularity is growing as it enters its second century.
