Director Brad Bird Rules Out Ratatouille 2 Despite Pixar's Nudges
Director Brad Bird has firmly ruled out a Ratatouille sequel, saying Remy's story is complete and there is nothing left to explore in that world. Speaking to Collider, Bird revealed that Pixar has made subtle attempts to gauge his interest in a follow-up, but he has consistently declined. He drew a parallel with The Iron Giant, noting that a good ending should be left alone.
Don't expect Pixar's favorite rat to make a return, as director Brad Bird sees no potential in a Ratatouille 2.Speaking with Collider, Bird was asked if he thinks there will be a second Ratatouille movie. Bird made it pretty clear that he believes Remy's story is completed and there's nothing left to do with that world. He noted Pixar has tried to nudge him into making a sequel, but he remains firm in his decision to leave it alone. No, I don't, said Bird. They've made little feints towards that to see how I would react. They'll, like, crack a joke, but the joke will be a little bit serious, like, 'Would you?' And I'm like, 'No, we told that story.' Any time you do something that ends up connecting with people, they automatically think, 'How about another?' People have mentioned it about The Iron Giant, which is hilarious to me because the film didn't succeed at all in its initial release. It's caught up in time, but what would you do to follow that up? He's lumbering around, still undiscovered? In other words, to me, that story is told. Bird did say he's open to revisiting his superhero franchise, The Incredibles, however. Pixar is indeed moving forward with The Incredibles 3, which will be helmed by Elemental director Peter Sohn, but Bird will be penning the script. Bird also voiced Edna Mode, a fashion designer who creates the supersuits for the various heroes, so don't be surprised if he returns to his voice role, too.Bird's commitment to not continuing the story of Ratatouille may strike some as surprising. Pixar just released Toy Story 5 and, although it is performing very well, there's a looming feeling that the franchise has overstayed its welcome. Some feel that Toy Story 3 was the perfect send-off for Woody, Buzz, and the rest of the gang, but Pixar has continued to push the series forward. Of course, Disney and Pixar could probably make another Ratatouille without Bird, but they'd risk the chance of not only making a lesser film, but also damaging their relationship with a respected creative.Cade Onder is a freelancer for IGN's news team.
